Sciatica has several causes and in this video, I discuss the top 3 causes. Sciatica symptoms include lower back pain that is sharp pain and goes down the distribution of the sciatic nerve which runs from the lower back all the way down to the toes.
Whenever there is a disc herniation present, the outward disc protrusion can pinch the sciatic nerve and cause sciatica. Conservative sciatica treatment for a herniated disc includes specific exercises and traction.
About 90% of people with disc herniations can heal WITHOUT the need for herniated disc surgery / sciatica surgery. That surgery is called a microdiscectomy.
Another cause of sciatica is spinal stenosis, where the spinal canal is narrowed and now nerves and spinal cord have less room to move normally. When the spinal canal narrows, certain movements can irritate the sciatic nerve and produce sciatica.
Another cause of sciatica is piriformis syndrome. This is sometimes called pseudo-sciatica because it does not originate from the spine but you can still feel sciatica symptoms. This is caused by inflammation of the piriformis muscle which usually runs on top of the sciatic nerve.
It’s very important to know what’s causing your sciatica because then you can structure the treatment plan accordingly.
Other common conditions that cause sciatic nerve pain and pinch the nerve include bulging discs, degenerative disc disease, slipped disk, and ruptured disc.
A correct diagnosis and an effective treatment plan should include sciatica exercises and stretches that over time can relieve the sciatic pain.
